July 29, 2010 - Comic-Con 2010: ‘The Other Guys’ Interview

We’re finishing up our coverage of Comic-Con 2010 with the press conference for The Others Guys, a buddy cop comedy starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, Dwayne Johnson, and Samuel L. Jackson.  Adam McKay (Anchorman, Step Brothers) co-wrote and directed.

But first, Columbia Pictures is running a voting contest on Facebook to bring the red carpet premiere to the winning city.  The field has already narrowed from 25 to 10 and then to 5 (poor Austin missed the cut), but click over and vote for your favorite.  The final five are Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, and St. Louis or, if you’re not partial to one, just click Dallas.  The winner will be announced August 2.

Ok, back to Comic-Con, where McKay, Ferrell, Wahlberg, and Mendes took questions at the press conference:

How much of the movie was improvised?  What percentage would you say…?

McKay: We have to, for our bond company, we actually have to give them the exact percentages.  We brought in an actuary and broke it down.  This movie was 14.3789% improvised, and the rest was scripted.

Ferrell: That would be 86… 85%  Roughly.  Yeah, if you round up.

McKay: You know, that’s actually somewhat of a serious answer.  Probably abut 15-20% was improvised because we goof around within the scenes, but the overall story structure roughly stays the same.

With respect to buddy capers, obviously if you were improvising you had Will Ferrell who is a master of improvisation, how much did you (Wahlberg) learn from him on set?

Wahlberg: I think it was the other way around, actually.

Ferrell: It’s true.

Wahlberg: I think he couldn’t handle all the curveballs I was throwing at him.

Ferrell: No, it really is kind of the same approach.  In terms of… whether it’s a drama or comedy.  We both just had the same philosophy: treat the characters as if it’s real.  Be earnest in every moment and we’re never winking at the camera.  So within that it was, because we had the same philosophy, it was very easy to improvise with each other. >> Read More

July 18, 2010 - Wahlberg Confirms Plans To Star In The Raven, Gives Details About Cocaine Cowboys

Earlier this morning Latino Review posted a story that Mark Wahlberg was in talks to produce and star in a feature-length adaptation of the Ricardo de Montreuil short film The Raven which blew up online back in April. Just my luck, I caught the story just as I was leaving for a press junket for The Other Guys, where I would have the chance to talk to Wahlberg not only about The Raven, but his other future projects as well.

It turns out that Latino Review’s info was accurate, however, Wahlberg is not in talks to adapt the short as a feature but rather has been developing it for about a month now. The actor told me that the plan is for him to both serve as producer and star in the film as Chris Black, a man living in a futuristic Los Angeles who wakes up one morning to find that the police have tracked him down with plans to arrest him. What we don’t know is that Black is not just an ordinary criminal on the run for the law. “It will be a very, very different kind of superhero movie,” said Wahlberg. “Certainly not me running around with a cape on or some suit. The idea that they came up with for the feature is spectacular.” Set to be directed by de Montreuil, the actor expects the script to be completed in six to eight weeks and will then start shooting immediately.

Wahlberg also gave us an update on the long in-development project Cocaine Cowboys, based on the 2006 Billy Corben documentary. Wahlberg has been rumored for the project since 2008, playing the role of Jon Roberts, the famed drug trafficker who worked out of Miami for the Colombian Medellin cartel. Peter Berg is currently attached to direct and the script, written by Generation Kill’s Evan Wright, is currently undergoing rewrites. While he is excited for the project, Wahlberg says that they have “a couple of other things that we are developing and hope to shoot at least one or two more things before that. But nothing’s locked in yet.”

July 17, 2010 - Mark Wahlberg Remakes “The Raven”

The wave of acclaimed online shorts scoring feature film deals shows no sign of slowing with Ricardo de Montreuil’s chase thriller “The Raven” the latest to join the club.

Filmed on the RED camera, the original $5000 short was shot in downtown Los Angeles over a weekend and is set in an alternate future Los Angeles which has become something of a police state. A man named Chris Black (Victor Lopez) is being pursued by the current regime as he possess powers that could lead to its demise.

Now, Latino Review reports that Mark Wahlberg is in talks to star and produce the feature film version for Universal Pictures. Justin Marks is penning the script and Montreuil will return as director. Further details to come.

July 15, 2010 - Bring The Other Guys Other Premiere to Your Town

In anticipation of the nationwide release of Columbia Pictures’ The Other Guys, starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, in theaters August 6th, the film will make its World Premiere in New York City on August 2nd. But the fun won’t stop there.

The movie will have another premiere, “The Other Premiere”, and moviegoers can help decide where it will be. Beginning today, moviegoers can go on Facebook at Facebook.com/OtherGuysMovie and vote in a poll to decide which Other City will host The Other Premiere. Ferrell and Wahlberg will attend the red carpet event in the winning city on August 5th.

The 20 candidate cities are Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, Miami, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, Orlando, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Seattle, Tampa/St. Petersburg, and Washington, DC. On August 2, Ferrell and Wahlberg will announce the winning city.

Commenting on the announcement, Adam McKay, director of The Other Guys, said, “We’ve all had those moments when we’ve had to watch some other guy be the cool guy. But your city can be the cool city. Get on Facebook and vote, and we’ll bring The Other Premiere to you.”

In The Other Guys, NYPD Detectives Christopher Danson and P.K. Highsmith (Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson) are the baddest and most beloved cops in New York City. They don’t get tattoos – other men get tattoos of them. Two desks over and one back, sit Detectives Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg). You’ve seen them in the background of photos of Danson and Highsmith, out of focus and eyes closed. They’re not heroes – they’re “the Other Guys.”

But every cop has his or her day and soon Gamble and Hoitz stumble into a seemingly innocuous case no other detective wants to touch that could turn into New York City’s biggest crime. It’s the opportunity of their lives, but do these guys have the right stuff?

The Other Guys comes to theaters August 6th, 2010 and stars Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell, Samuel L. Jackson, Lindsay Sloane, Dwayne Johnson, Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton, Ray Stevenson. The film is directed by Adam McKay.
